What is going on with Spider-Man?

The Amazing Spider-man 2 came out last week. Of the four Marvel movies that have come out this year, this was the least of them, both critically and financially. The least grossing Spider-man movie to date, this was the film that was supposed to take the Spider-man properties from trilogy to expansive universe. So what exactly is Sony’s plan for the future years? Well they have a couple films lined up.

Sinister Six

Supposedly the team of villains is going to get their own movie. They official roster has yet to be reported, although it was hinted at in the credits of the Amazing Spiderman 2 (you can read up on that here). It’s unclear if this movie will take place before or after the Amazing Spiderman 3.

Venom

Sony has announced a Venom movie, which supposedly will feature his counter-part, Carnage. So far, the Universe has acknowledge Venom and Carnage in nothing more than easter egg rolls, briefly seen on Norman Osborn’s hard drive. There has been nothing more revealed, much less a tentative release date.

Female-Led Movie

Sony announced a spin-off film that will focus on a female. The two most obvious options are Spider-woman and Black Cat. Personally, I think it’s more likely to be Black Cat, as a “Felicity” character was featured heavily in the Amazing Spider-man 2.

Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4

There have been confirmed two more movies in production. To be honest, we have a June 10, 2016 release date on Amazing Spider-man 3, but nothing more at all. We don’t know if this will further the Sinister Six storyline, introduce the venom storyline, or really, anything. We know nothing.

So why do I bring all this up? It basically is a list of movies that have been confirmed, that we know nothing at all about. That’s sort of my point. TAS2 did not do well at all. I am wondering what is going on in the closed-door meetings at Sony. Is is financially feasible to continue building this Universe? Yes, the characters are some of the most well-known of all the Marvel Universe, but that does not guarantee commercial success.

The thing that worries me most about the Spider-Man Universe is that there is no news coming from it. Yes, we have confirmed movies for some point in the future, but that’s it. We have no directors for the spin-offs. We have no screenwriters. I am watching carefully for any hint of news, and I’m not finding it.

I don’t think Sony will simply abandon the Universe or anything as drastic as that, but I think the lack of success with the Amazing Spider-man 2 is going to hit them hard. They will be rethinking a lot of their plan and going “back to the drawing board”, so to speak.

I don’t have any evidence for this, but this is what I think is going on with the Spider-man universe. The important thing to remember with movies is that Hollywood is a business before anything else. If it doesn’t make money, it is not worth it.

So for the future of the Spider-man Universe, only time will tell.

Check back tomorrow for the lowdown on the Defenders who aren’t Daredevil.

  1. TAS2 would have done better if they hadn’t wanted too much at once. They were so hasty setting up the sinister six that it lacks the careful character development which made TAS so good. But I think they will for now go ahead with TAS3 before making any decisions about the other movies.
