Captain America: Civil War – Casting and Implications

Last week, some very interesting announcements were made regarding the casting of Captain America: Civil War. The movie will be something like Avengers 2.5, with the scope of an Avenger’s movie and the casting to match. These additions to the cast will prove interesting to the direction of the film.

General Thunderbolt Ross

For the first time, William Hurt will reprise his roll as General Thunderbolt Ross. Marvel has since attempted to distance themselves from their Hulk movie following the casting fiasco of replacing Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo. The love story was also largely abandoned, especially in light of the romance between Black Widow and Banner.

There are some questions regarding why the General is involved in the film at all. I would say it’s most likely as a part of the government aspect of registration. He has been anti-Hulk for a while. In light of the events regarding Hulk in Africa during Age of Ultron, Ross is entitled to his “Toldya so”.

I applaud the introduction of the character to this film. I think one of Marvel’s greatest sins was abandoning many of the storylines of the Incredible Hulk, which was one of my favorite movies of Phase 1.

Ant-Man

Paul Rudd has signed on for Civil War. This is a surprising move, as many people haven’t even considered the implications of Ant-Man yet, but treat it as a stand-alone movie already (if they think on it at all). I think that his inclusion here demonstrates that Rudd’s Scott Lang will likely be endowed with the responsibilities of Hank Pym from the comics. While Pym is involved in the film (played by the wonderful Michael Douglas), I am willing to wager that the only Ant-Man with any weight in the MCU is going to be Lang.

Also, I think this casting call adds an interesting addition to Iron Man’s side. While we have no idea who will fall on what side during the Registration War, it’s very likely that Cap’s side will be stacked with heroes. If Lang does replace the character of Pym in the scope of the MCU, it’s likely that he will be anti-registration. Adding his character is a smart move on Marvel’s side.

Martin Freeman

Another interesting addition to the film is Martin Freeman. Although his roll has been kept secret, Freeman has felt a couple different rumors on his roll already. The most prominent has been that he will be playing Everette Ross, a diplomat to Wakanda. This rumor also says he will also be featured in Black Panther. This seems strange to have a big actor play a non-powered (and frankly a side character), but it also makes sense not to introduce yet another powered individual to the partial Avengers film. Also, it would seem strange to reintroduce General Ross and then introduce another character named Ross. This may be confusing.

Truly, we don’t know who he will be playing. My hopes that he would be cast as Wong in Doctor Strange, however, seem to be dashed.

The New Avengers

Don Cheadle and Paul Bettany have finally been cast for the film. This completes the line-up for the New Avengers in this upcoming film. The line-up of the New Avengers has all been confirmed for Civil War. I’ll take a closer look at them and their allegiances in this film soon, but the New Avengers is a fantastic team to me and I look forward to seeing them in action.

Synopsis

We also have the official synopsis for the film:

“‘Captain America: Civil War’ picks up where ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.”

This new villain has been confirmed to be Zemo. It’s interesting that he seems to be the focus of the film at the moment, not Iron Man. In the comics, the war was a feud between Steve and Tony. Now, it seems like this confrontation may not be the focus of the film.

Crossbones Seen

We also got our first look at Crossbones in full costume through set pictures in the last couple days. Check this out:

I love this look from the comics Crossbones. Once again, I will call it a wonderful adaptation.

Of course, we really don’t know much besides pictures and casting. What do you think? Are you excited for the film? We can speculate as much as we like now, but for now only time will tell.
