Yesterday, Daniel Bruhl confirmed his roll as Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War. Previously, he was rumored only to be the villain of the film, but many (myself included) speculated that he would appear as Baron Zemo.
Zemo was one of the original Captain America villains, as well as one of the original Avenger villains. It was Baron Zemo that brought Captain America and Bucky down into chilled waters to free Cap and send Bucky on his way to Winter Soldier (although he was dead for almost half a century, real life time). When the Avengers formed and Cap thawed, Baron Zemo formed the Masters of Evil, a sort of Anti-Avengers group that was their chief villains for the first dozen issues or so.
Baron Zemo was killed in issue #14 of the Avengers (they went up to 503), but his son took up the purple hood and carried on in his father’s tradition. He later changed his ways and became a founding member of the Thunderbolts, a superhero team of reformed villains.
Personally, I am a huge fan of Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo. I am curious if they are going to have his be preserved again across decades or if they’ll have the purple hood passed down through generations.
It’s also important to note that Baron Zemo had almost no roll in the Civil War. Although he was present, it was not effective. It will be interesting to see how they adapt him into the story arc. For now, only time will tell.
