Avengers 3 is nine movies away. There are numerous possible wrenches that could throw off the entire MCU. We can’t know the impact that movies such as Avengers 2, Guardians 2, Captain America: Civil War, or Thor: Ragnarok will have on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That means that we don’t know what the Universe will look like when we finally get to Avengers: Infinity War, parts 1 or 2, in four or five years. So is there anything that we can actually guess about the movies? Probably not.
That being said, what can we expect regarding the hero of the Infinity Gauntlet in the comics, Adam Warlock?
For those of you who don’t know who Warlock is, fear not. I intend my articles to give just such comic background.
Adam Warlock was created to be the perfect being. For a long time, he wasn’t even known by a name, but was simply known as Him. He had the soul gem in his forehead for a long time, which enabled him to capture the spirits of others and suck them into the gem.
In the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, it was Adam Warlock that assembled the armies to go against Thanos. (possible spoilers:) It was also Adam Warlock that ended up with the Infinity Gauntlet in the end. He went off to rule the Universe as a god, more or less. He is presented as the hero of the entire storyline.
So how much of that will cross over into the movies?
Adam Warlock has not yet been introduced. We have seen a couple images of a certain cocoon that was used to breed Warlock in the comics:
It’s hard to say if this is merely an Easter Egg or a plot device. I lean towards Easter Egg, just as most of the other items in the Collector’s room probably are, but it’s hard to say. This is the item that appeared in both Guardians and Thor 2’s post credits. Does that lend it more credibility?
I am leaning towards the idea that Warlock will not appear in the MCU. If he were to jump out of the cocoon at any point, it would have to be during either Thor: Ragnarok, Guardians 2, or the Inhumans (the only three of the phase three movies that are likely to take place in space). If this character were introduced in phase 3 and goes on to defeat the villain teased since the end of phase 1, it would feel very rushed. Not to mention, it’s called Avengers 3, indicating the heroes are the Avengers.
More likely, I think the Guardians will take the place of Adam Warlock. Maybe they won’t be the chief heroes, but the ones to come and say, “You have to trust us, there is some serious trouble brewing.” There were rumors of the Guardians showing up in Avengers 3 even before we knew that Thanos would be the villain. In this five hour epic (two 2.5 hour long movies), there is plenty of room for the Guardians as well as the Avengers.
What do you think? Will we see Adam Warlock? Will there even be a need for a character like him once we reach the Avengers 3? Or is it simply too early to tell?
