Hulk Sequel?

Disclaimer: No, this is not an announcement article. As much as I wish I could write that announcement article…

DotpKing recently asked about the Leader and his involvement in a possible Planet Hulk movie. As DotpKing has been one of my most avid followers, I figured I would dedicate this article to her and that question. So here we go!

The way I see it, there are three ways a next Hulk movie will go down.

#1 Straight-Up Sequel

leader

The Leader has already been set up as a villain. Ty Burrell says he would like to reprise his roll as Doc Samson. The Abomination still lives. Marvel could do another Bourne-movie-ish movie about Bruce Banner running from the authorities, while occasionally hulking out. I would watch it.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible. That movie has been made twice. Once in 2003, where most people agree it sucked (there are a select few who liked it, to be fair). Then again in 2008, where it was good, but no one saw it. So I doubt, despite the build-up, that Marvel would attempt a third try at the same military-ish movie that wasn’t successful in the first place.

It’s a shame, actually, and I pray I’m wrong.

#2 Straight-Up Planet Hulk

Planet-Hulk-2010-1

Planet Hulk is a very popular story arc, where Hulk basically pulls a Gladiator and takes over a planet. Fanboys, myself included, have been asking for a Planet Hulk movie for a while. Also, a few references have been scattered over Phase 2. The rock monster that Thor owns in The Dark World was actually one of Hulk’s adversaries in the fighting pits. And Hulk took over the planet Sakaar. The Sakaarians were Ronan’s fighting boys in Guardians.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll see a Planet Hulk movie. Marvel consistently has denied that a Planet Hulk movie will take place. It’s easy to say, “They’re just throwing us off the scent!”, but there is also a distinct lack of evidence that it has ever been considered. Mark Ruffalo has been questioned and has been adamant that no one has told him about any solo Hulk movie.

Also, there is a cartoon Planet Hulk movie. Why does that matter? Because anyone then can come up and watch the cartoon and get the whole storyline. Unless it’s changed enough to not be the same, which could tick off the fanboys that they were appeasing by making Planet Hulk in the first place.

Finally, Ruffalo, they’re prized actor who everyone seemed to love in with during the Avengers, wouldn’t even have screen time. He would be all motion capture, as Banner doesn’t factor into the storyline at all.

In short, I doubt a straight-up Planet Hulk movie.

#3 Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Okay, so this is straight out of the rumor mill, I admit it. It’s the same rumor mill that said that said Alexander Pierce was the Red Skull and that Richard Ryder was the post-credits of Guardians. But if it does turn out to be true, SPOILER ALERT. So, disclaimers aside, there is rumors that Banner will find himself trapped on a plane headed into space at the end of Avengers 2.

Much of the filming has already been done on Avengers: Age of Ulton, so it’s possible that such a leak could find it’s way onto the internet. The rumors say that this rogue plane is picked up by the Guardians of the Galaxy. Guardians 2, therefore, is largely trying to get Banner back home, amidst other plotlines, I’m sure. This would connect the Guardians and the Avengers together, as right now they are very separate entities (literally, the only common ground they have is that they have both ticked off Thanos).

So if this does turn out to be true, it’d be a way of politely nodding at Planet Hulk, without actually making a Planet Hulk movie. Also, Marvel would be tucking a recognizable hero into one of their newest and suddenly popular franchises, Guardians.

So these are the major options for a new Hulk movie in the near future. I doubt that the Leader would play a part in any but the first option, only because of the time that would already be required to pull off the movie in the first place. I hope this adequately answers your question, DotpKing.

Truthfully, in the end, only time will tell Hulk’s future.

Check back tomorrow for the confirmed facts on Ultron.
