This is not new news, but it is something I have not addressed quite yet. Marvel has announced that they will be releasing 4 new TV series in collaboration with Netflix. These shows, debuting next year, will be focused on Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones.
Many non-Marvel fans may know Daredevil from his pre-Batman Ben Affleck incarnation in 2003. The movie, although nearly perfectly cast, suffered under a horrible script, left a bad taste in people’s mouths. Many people familiar with Marvel may know Luke Cage and Iron Fist as the Heroes for Hire, “good guys” who sell their hero abilities to those in need. Very few people know anything at all about Jessica Jones (I had to look her up when I heard). She, apart from being the wife of Luke Cage, is a superhuman who has high levels of physical strength and very resistant skin.
These four shows will all take place in Hell’s Kitchen (most known for being Daredevil’s neighborhood), but even more exciting is what this is leading towards. These four heroes, AFTER being introduced on their own, will build into the Defenders. Although nowhere near the original Defenders roster in the comics, I am very excited to see this incarnation on screen.
Does this formula sound familiar at all? Introduce characters beforehand before having them team up in a joint project? This is exactly the approach The Avengers was founded on. Some people knew who the Hulk was (just as they knew Daredevil), may have heard of Captain America and Iron Man (such as Iron Fist and Luke Cage), and didn’t know much about Thor (like Jessica Jones).
Not to mention the fact that Netflix has more than proven themselves with House of Cards (starring Kevin Spacey, one of my favorite actors of all time). Marvel, who does great work, meets Netflix, who has proven themselves, will most certainly result in an awesome movie. As usual, however, only time will tell.
