Marvel Comics has some of the most complex, bold, and impactful story arcs across the comics. Often times, a single story arc changes the course of the entire comic universe. So far, almost none of these arcs have ever been brought to the big screen. So these are some of my favorites that I would like to see brought to film. I should clarify, I don’t intend these to be ones that I predict to come, but rather I would like to see. I am also choosing to ignore the copyright restrictions.
This story arc saw the Grandmaster, one of the “Elders of the Universe” obsessed with pitting people against each other, captures all of our favorite heroes and makes them duel to the death. This sets the perfect stage for the matchups we have always wanted to see. If we were to see a big screen representation, it would pit Hulk against Wolverine, Spiderman against Captain America, Gambit vs Hawkeye, and other similar match-ups. Think Marvel Spartacus.
Also, fun fact: This happens to be the origin of the “venom suit” for Spiderman. It was during this arc that he found it and brought it back home with him afterwards.
Yeah, yeah. They tried. I know. But frankly, the Phoenix of X-men 3 did not represent the Phoenix from the comics in any way, shape, or form. Although beautifully set up, it could have done so much better. The Phoenix tried to lay waste to the whole world. It was Jean Grey herself who heroically ended her own life, so as to stop the Phoenix’s power.
Avengers vs. X-men
If only Fox and Disney could get along… *sigh* This arc is incredibly recent. As the title suggests, the X-men and the Avengers go head to head. The Phoenix Force (from the previously discussed arc), returns and endows certain members of the X-men with higher abilities. Although the arc was popular or unpopular depending on who you talk to, this could be done extremely well in the movies (even ignoring the Phoenix). Who wouldn’t want to see Tony Stark trying to talk smack against Wolverine?
An alien shape-shifting race – the Skrulls – has invaded the Earth. Now, who can you trust? Who is human and who isn’t? One of the most hazardous times in the history of Marvel Comics, this would be incredibly intense on the big screen.
My all-time favorite story arc, the Civil War divides the Heroes of Marvel right in half over the issue of secret identities. Iron Man leads the Pro-Registration movement against Captain America. Spiderman reveals his identity, then flips sides. All the time, families, teams, and friendships are torn apart in a bloody feud. It’s intense, action-packed, and for one of the first time in Marvel Comics, we don’t have a clear picture of who is right and who is wrong.
So these are my picks for what I want to see on the big screen. I bet one of these will make their way onto the screen at some point, but not all. I suppose only time will tell.
