The Amazing Spiderman 2 will premiere on May 2nd, but much of the movie is already being seen in the form of numerous trailers and teasers. Between the rumors, the fan-boy predictions, and the cold hard facts, what do we truly know for sure?
Jaime Fox steps forward as Max Dillon, the film’s primary antagonist. Electro has complete control over electricity. Instead of a green and yellow suit, the film borrows from the Ultimate Series, turning Electro blue. Aside from the previewed “crush the spider” quotes, we don’t actually know much about Electro in this movie. Paul Giamatti (see Rhino), has ensured us that Electro is the primary villain and the others are merely “in the background”.
I suppose this was inevitable. Spiderman’s chief villain couldn’t stay away for long. In an effort to be different from the original Spiderman series, however, it doesn’t look like Norman will be the one to take to the skies against Spiderman. Dane Dehaan, who caught audience’s attention with Chronicle (if you haven’t seen it, stop right now and go to redbox), will be the Green Goblin this time around, as Harry Osborn. We haven’t seen much of him, but he is definitely in the movie.
Paul Giamatti has held my respect as an actor for a long time. I was thrilled when I heard the casting of him as Aleksei Sytsevich, otherwise known as the Rhino. The movie is taking a different route with the Rhino, however, substituting the normal grey suit for a mech suit of sorts. Personally, I think this is a good route to take with a more realistic Spiderman series. Once again, Giamatti has said that he and Goblin will be more background characters, while Electro takes center stage.
Emma Stone reprises her roll as Gwen Stacy, to no one’s great surprise. The following contains spoilers. Consider yourself warned. The real question is if Gwen is going to kick the bucket in this movie. Sony is keeping the details under wraps, but Gwen does wear a rather familiar looking outfit in this movie… Take a look at the link below:
Personally, this seems rather intentional on the part of the film makers. For all you Emma Stoners, be sure to bring your box of tissues to the theater.
In this movie, Peter takes a further step closer to finding his parents’ fates. In truth, I forgot about this part of the first movie. Frankly, after the Lizard plot started kicking into gear, I think Peter did as well. But it’s back for this movie!
Spiderman Saga’s Future
This movie has already teased the appearance of the Sinister Six, although I doubt they will be materialized fully in this film. Also, with a venom movie approaching, a Sinister Six movie approaching, and Spiderman 3 and 4 in the plan, I think we’re going to be seeing at least some teaser for the villain-centered movies.
No Mary Jane
Although Shailene Woodley was originally cast as Mary Jane Watson, she has since been dropped. Whether this is due to an already-full movie (3 supervillains didn’t work in Spiderman 3, so I have my worries) or due to the internet fan-boys clammoring against her looks (which I personally think is BS, but that’s for another post), she has been officially cut from this movie. There have been mixed reports as to if she will return in Spiderman 3 or 4 as Spidy’s main gal. Time will tell.
So there you have it. 3 supervillains, a bunch of potential relationship drama, daddy issues, and the future of Spiderman. In truth, we don’t know a lot just yet, although a lot can be guessed from the trailer. Plenty of people will claim to know the future of Spiderman, but these are our cold hard facts.
