The X-men movies are the longest lasting comic book franchise in cinematic history. Six movies and thirteen years later, we have the Ultimate X-men Movie. Having been compared to the Avengers in scale, this movie is promised to be massive, complex, and a landmark – although there is no promise that’s a good thing.
But amidst the rumors, trailers, and stills from the movie, what do we actually know for certain?
The cast brings together the two X-men casts, from the original 3 movies to the First Class cast, as well as adding a few new ones. So what is our roster? From the original series:
- Professor X
- Kitty Pryde
From First Class:
- Professor X
And new mutants:
- Toad (reimagined from the first movie)
Quite the roster, isn’t it?
Staying true to the comics, Days of Future Past involves time travel, thereby connecting the old and new casts. Apparently, it is Wolverine and Magneto that travel back in time, if the trailer can be trusted, to prevent a future where mutants are hunted and exterminated.
Trask and the Sentinels
Peter Dinklage joins the X-men universe as Bolivar Trask, the maker of the Sentinels. What are sentinels? I’m glad you asked!
Sentinels are giant mutant-hunting robots. They were teased in the war room scene of X-men 3, but never fully realized onscreen. Many fan-boys were upset by this, as the sentinels have always been one of the primary threats against mutants in the comics.
Of course, Peter Dinklage is a fantastic actor and I have the highest expectations for him as Trask.
Josh Helman takes the roll of William Stryker for the third incarnation. After this movie, he will have been featured in almost half the X-men movies. His roll in the film is ambiguous at the moment.
For those who need a refresher, Stryker is responsible for giving Wolverine his adamantium claws… as well as the maiming of the Merc with a Mouth.
Anna Paquin was set to appear in the film, reprising her roll as Rogue, one of the primary characters of the original series. She has appeared in multiple trailers and the Empire magazine covers, but the film makers claim that she has been pulled from the movie. Evidently, her character was only featured in one sequence, which has landed on the cutting room floor.
Evan Peters appears as Pietro Maximoff, otherwise known as Quicksilver. Marvel’s answer to the Flash, Pietro is the son of Magento in the comics. His sister, the Scarlett Witch, is one of the more influential characters in Marvel history.
Our first solid look at Quicksilver was in the Empire Magazine covers. Many fans, myself included, were underwhelmed by his appearance.
This will not be the only incarnation of Quicksilver we will see in the near future. Quicksilver will also appear in the Avengers 2, although a different actor will be used. Early news indicates the two Quicksilvers will be vastly different incarnations of the character.
So that’s the summary of the hard facts of Days of Future Past. There have been plenty of rumors of spoilers with this movie, but these are the things confirmed by the studio. It will be the biggest X-men movie ever made. I have high hopes, but a few doubts. At any rate, we will know when Days of Future Past hits theaters on May 23.
