The Captain America sequel is rapidly approaching and the hype is increasing. Rumors are flying around the internet, trailers are hitting every other week, and nerds swooning in mass. So what do we actually know for sure?
The Winter Soldier
The movie is called The WInter Soldier. The trailers have shown several images of the Winter Soldier himself. So who is the Winter Soldier? None other than Bucky Barnes, the sidekick of Captain America. The first movie saw Bucky falling from a train down to icy depths. He returns in the sequel as the film’s main antagonist, complete with a robotic arm, eye paint, and some cool knife tricks.
The questions remain, however, as to exactly how Bucky survived his fall. The theories are abundant. My own theory traces back to the first movie, where Bucky was being experimented on inside a Hydra base. I believe they were attempted to replicate the super soldier serum.
The whole truth, however, is yet to be revealed.
Robert Redford makes his marvel movie debut in this film as Alexander Pierce, a higher-up SHIELD administrator who seems intensely set on creating the “new world”, while leaving the old one behind.
Very few people believe that Redford is a good guy in the flick. The rumors mostly involve Redford as being an undercover Hydra agent, although a few people claim that he is the Red Skull himself. Time will tell.
Natosha Romanov, the Black Widow, returns in this movie, working along side Cap during his hunt for the Winter Soldier. There is also rumor of a romance kindling between the two, but at the moment the only certain thing is that her hair changes every movie.
One of the most exciting debuts in this movie is Anthony Mackie in the roll of Sam Wilson, AKA The Falcon. A prominent avenger in the comics, the Falcon uses his wings to take flight in battle. The movie substituted his red flapping wings in favor of mechanical ones. Some of my favorite nerd-out moments include him taking flight. He is my most exciting part of the upcoming movie.
Crossbones makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. Brock Rumlow, played by Frank Grillo, appears to be a good guy in the trailers we have seen, although comic lore tells us that he will inevitably turn evil in the course of his story.
Chris Evans had said that this will be the strongest handoff from the Avengers and the strongest handoff to the Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. This is backed up by the highest count of Avengers’ cast, including Maria Hill, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and, of course, Cap himself.
So does this mean we will see Ultron take the screen? Will we see Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver? Once again, time will tell.
Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, and Arnim Zola are all returning to this movie. Many believe this will mean flashbacks and still others insist that we’re going to see rather old characters meeting a youthful cap (spoiler: although there have been set pictures with Peggy Carter dressed as a rather old woman). This movie, in addition to being a strong Avenger-linked movie, will be a definite sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger.
There is more to tell, but these are the basics of what we know. One thing does seem to be unanimous throughout all the interviews: this movie is going to be impressive. Many have even gone so far as to say, “The best marvel movie ever.” I sincerely hope this meets the hype.
